Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park is a gem, the longest undeveloped stretch of the New Jersey coast. The park terminates at the Barnegat Inlet. The tidal currents sweeping in and out of that opening have led to the creation of sedge and sand islands, which are lovely places to paddle and are rich in aquatic life. October is an ideal time to explore the area as bugs and boat traffic are way down, and the birds are migrating. The current in the channels leading to the inlet can be stiff, so consulting the tide tables is a good idea.

Before you go

  • Launch from a beach near the southern end of Island Beach State Park. The launch site is well-marked.
  • Tidal Current Information based on Barnegat Inlet
  • There are no facilities at the launch site, but there are at the ocean swimming areas in the park.
  • The launch site is popular, so it might be necessary to park in the lots on the main road. Kayak wheels might be handy, especially on the weekend.
