Pullen Island

Pullen Island is a wildlife preservation area between Long Beach Island and Brigantine, NJ. The closest access is from the wetlands across Shooting Thoroughfare. The drive across the sedge islands to a small beach near the Rutgers University, crossing single lane wooden bridges, is worth the trip by itself.  Shooting Thoroughfare is a section of the intracoastal waterway joining Little Egg Harbor to Great Bay. Little Egg inlet is directly opposite the launch sight offering a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Paddling to the island one encounters the last of the ocean swells combined with whatever waves the wind and passing motorboats might be generating. The island is a mix of dunes and wetlands making it a haven for migrating birds. This is a great fall paddle when the birds are migrating and there are no bugs.
